EXPERIANCE DESIGN LAB

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN PRACTICE (TEAMWORK): DESIGN FICTION

Project was developed as a group assignment within the Experience Design Laboratory, focusing on exploring the practice of Design Fiction. Aimed to apply design and critical thinking skills to imagine and prototype speculative futures. Design Fiction is a method that uses fictional scenarios and speculative design to explore the possible implications of emerging technologies and societal shifts.

The brief asked to create an original Design Fiction concept and bring it to life through a set of diegetic prototypes—objects or artifacts that exist within the imagined world—alongside user instructions and a media advertisement. These elements are intended to provoke reflection and discussion about future possibilities, ethical concerns, and unintended consequences.

PART 1. development of a what-if scenario including background research, analysis and observation of current trends and generation of faint signals.

“What if all tangible items had an expiry date?”

PART 2. design and development of an artefact that elicits critical discussions about the iterated Design Fiction - mundane, realistic, plausible, credible and coherent.

PART 3 - i. development of a physical prototype of a fictional product featuring the artefact and, as a result, successfully narrating the imagined future through the presentation of a familiar & mundane object.

PART 3 -ii. design & development of an interactive hi-fidelity prototype of the SCN Mobile App linked to the physical Prototypes.

PART 4. design & development of advertising materials and an interactive for the artefact and prototypes aimed to further communicate the outlined Design Fiction and provide with extra insights and depth to the developed future scenario.
